Changing Dermatologica Care in Dormaa: our collective role
Frederick Ahardzor (Fred)
From a very humble beginning, I am glad to be working as part of a small team to champion skin care in my country. Hello everyone, I am Frederick Ahordzor and I am glad to tell you a little about what we are doing about dermatology in my country.
So I come from Ghana, a small country in West Africa. We have very beautiful people and very beautiful places but we not doing so well when it comes to caring for people with skin diseases. This is because my country does not have enough dermatologists. The few dermatologists have prefer to work in the big cities of Accra and Kumasi. So many people living in the rural areas with skin problems do not get to see a dermatologist. The best they receive for their problems, is antibiotic injections from a group of public health workers who are trying to help them. I think this is not a good help.
In 2016, the local hospital where work (Presbyterian Hospital, Dormaa Ahenkro) received its first Dermatologist working in Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Dordrecht through the invitation of Mr. Hans Assenberg. After this visit, myself working with a small group of health workers with the same mind set, decided to become champions for dermatological care in our local area. We have received lots of support from our hospital management and our friends in the Netherlands.
Today, even though, we are not skin specialists yet, we have studied a lot about the skin and are able to render basic quality dermatological care for our local people. We are therefore glad to be working with Derma-To-Ghana Foundation to champion this further. We hope that through their support we can receive more training via knowledge transfer and also aids in acquiring important medicines and equipment for our practice.
We invite you to join hands with us. Hopefully, through your support, we can do more for our people.
Warm Regards from us here in Ghana.
Fred together with the team.
